This is not to say that if you sleep 7 or 8 hours a day, you will have perfect skin – I wish!!!! – but I do believe that sleep is very important to achieve our skin-related goals.

What is the truth about beauty sleep?

Lack of sleep leads to many health problems, apart from skin care. It can lead to obesity problems, it weakens the immune system and makes us more prone to infections… and of course, it causes skin problems.

The hours we spend sleeping, are hours in which our body recovers and repairs much of the damage caused to our body, such as free radicals, it is known that while we sleep, our body activates antioxidant processes, therefore, what happens if you do not sleep? if we sleep little or badly, these processes are cut and oxidative damage increases.

This oxidative damage results in premature ageing. The skin thins and the cells that produce collagen are altered and stop producing it. Collagen is essential for maintaining the skin’s structure and preventing sagging.

Which ingredients to use in the evening?

Antioxidants: One of the most important causes of premature ageing are free radicals. With antioxidants we manage to block them and at the same time delay the signs of ageing. Antioxidants can be used both in the morning and night routine.

Retinoids: This is the night-time ingredient per excellence. The retinoid family is one of the worst enemies of skin ageing. They are chemical exfoliants that help us to eliminate the layer of dead cells that we have on our skin achieving a much more luminous skin. They also greatly improve the texture of the skin, visibly reducing wrinkles and expression lines. Retinoids sensitise the skin, which is why it is especially important to protect it from the sun the following day, as spots or irritation can occur if we do not protect ourselves properly.

Alpha-hydroxy acids: This family of ingredients are exfoliating acids and have many uses for our skin. In addition to removing the layer of dead cells from our skin, they will help with hyperpigmentation of the skin, acne, enlarged pores, dry skin… these acids are glycolic, lactic, malic, citric, tartaric acid… They are mainly used at night (although in some cases they can also be recommended in the mornings) because, like retinoids, they sensitise the skin and it is particularly important to use high sun protection the following day.

Moisturisers: Moisturising is important for skin from the time we are young. Night creams tend to have a much richer texture to prevent moisture loss during the night and help us wake up with beautiful skin.

After knowing how sleep, or rather the lack of it, affects our skin, do you still think that sleeping 6 hours a day is enough? Are you going to try to improve your sleep routine to get a more beautiful complexion? Let me know if you have noticed that in times of stress and poorer sleep your skin also suffers or if you do not notice anything different.

See you next week and you know, you can follow us on our Instagram profile to stay up to date on all things cosmetics and skincare!

There are times of the year when certain issues, such as social relations, summer, work, can affect our sleep, so today we are going to discover what the concept of “beauty sleep” is and what effects it has.
