We are here to help you knowing what kind of foundation is best suited to you.

Well, in today’s article we will explain each of them so that next time you need to buy one, you will know exactly which one to go for depending on your type of leather or the finish you want to obtain.

Liquid Bases

They are the most typical, quite easy to find and versatile with different finishes and duration. They can have a matte finish, which will lengthen their duration on the face, or a more satin finish that usually provides some hydration but does not hold up as well to the passage of hours.

This type of base is very easy to apply, we can do it directly with the hands as if it was a normal cream, also if it is applied in this way we will get a higher coverage (I personally like it the least in general, but who likes it, it is a way of application as valid as the others). You can also apply it with a brush, which will subtract some coverage that, if applied with the hands and, finally, we can also apply it with a sponge, which is my favourite method, but at the same time is the least coverage it provides because the sponge absorbs a part of the product, so it will be a lighter and more natural finish. There are formulations for all types of skin, for example, for oily skin, the formulation will not have an oily base, unlike a base for dry skin.

This type of base is ideal for skin with small wrinkles or imperfections.

Powder bases

These foundations are (in principle) less light and the skin feels heavier, but they usually last longer on the face than liquid foundations. They tend to leave a matte effect, although some of them may have satin particles to provide some shine but will not have the same glowy effect as liquid foundations and do not provide hydration or oil. The application of this type of base is with a brush, the thicker ones provide more coverage and the brushes with the hairs more open.

This type of foundation is ideal for oily, mixed, or normal skin with colour imperfections, but little texture, as it absorbs the excess sebum generated during the day. In addition, they are perfect for touching up make-up over time.

Cream bases

These bases are very covering, ideal to unify the colour of the skin of the face. Due to their formulation, they tend to be satin, so they would be recommended for dry or normal skin, not for oily skin. The way I like to apply it is with a sponge and working with noticeably light layers to control the coverage well.

Mousse bases

They are used in soft and natural make-up and are also quite easy to apply with a brush or sponge. They have a light coverage and leave a velvety finish. They can be used by all skin types, even the most sensitive.

Stick bases

This type of base is my favourite for the winter months when the skin tends to dry out. It is practical, versatile, and easy to apply directly “painting” some lines on the face and then spreading it with a brush or sponge, depending on the coverage we want to obtain. They are recommended for normal or dry skin because at the end of the day they can bring out undesired shine in skins with an oily tendency. It is ideal to reapply at all times.

I like to apply it in very thin layers giving more coverage to the doughnut in the centre of the face and blurring towards the edges. They tend to have a very modulated coverage depending on the amount applied, from a very subtle second skin effect to almost total coverage.

BB cream

They are the easiest to apply of all for daily use with a very subtle coverage. They have a moisturizer-like texture so they can be applied with your hands or with a brush. In general, I would not recommend applying them with a brush since it loses coverage and as it absorbs the product, it also reduces hydration, which is another characteristic of this type of foundation. In addition, they usually have other properties such as anti-wrinkle, antioxidant, sun protection…

There are for all types of skin and in terms of tones do not tend to have much variety as they are so light and tend to melt and blend better with our skin tone.

Cushion base

They are the newest ones, this type of base comes from the Asian culture to obtain a “porcelain skin”, they usually have a light, juicy and very natural coverage. This base is, in fact, a sponge soaked in make-up that as we squeeze the container, it releases make-up. It is a clean, comfortable, compact format and perfect for travelling as you do not need anything extra to apply it because it comes with its own sponge.

I hope that the next time you buy a make-up base you will be clearer about which one to buy according to your skin type, application method and finish you want to obtain.

We would love you to leave us a comment on what your next purchase will be

You have probably heard about the different types of foundation on the market, they can be liquid, powder, mousse, coushion, cream, stick and BB creams and you are probably not clear about the main differences in finish, texture or coverage.
