During the summer, the skin suffers more than the rest of the months because it is more exposed to external aggressions such as the sun’s rays, chlorine from the swimming pool, salt from the sea, changes in eating habits… so we should take more care of it than during the rest of the year. And now in September is the ideal time to resume the personal care routine that will help us to recover our skin. How to recover the skin after summer? We give you all the details.
As I have already said in a previous post, I consider September as the “Monday” of the year and it is the perfect time to undertake projects and implement routines. After the summer we have duller skin, and it is even likely that some spots have appeared as a result of the sun’s radiation. In addition, as we already know, the sun causes premature ageing leading to wrinkles, dry and flaky skin that feels rough and dehydrated.
Now that the months with the highest incidence of sunlight are over, let’s try to recover the skin after the summer and even improve it.
The first step to prepare the skin for the arrival of autumn is exfoliation, during these months the skin has suffered much more than usual and we must remove dead skin and impurities that have been secreted to have it well prepared for further treatment. You can use physical exfoliators (with solid particles that remove impurities) or chemical exfoliators (with ingredients such as lactic acid or salicylic acid, among others). I would recommend the former for oily or combination skin, as it will need a deeper cleansing, and the latter for combination to dry skin and even for sensitive skin.
Once we have the skin “naked” and ready to give it what it needs, we are going to put a mask to help us repair the skin, a good option is the Kiehl’s Calendula and Aloe mask, thanks to its gel texture and its ingredients, it will soothe, hydrate, relieve and refresh the skin in just 5 minutes and gives you back the “good face” effect, in addition we can use it up to 3 times a week (even sensitive skin). It is recommended for dull, stressed, tired skin… and this is exactly how our skin looks at the end of the summer.
Moisturising is another key point to recover the complexion. In this case it is very important to be constant in the morning and at night because after so much exposure to the sun, we usually have dehydrated skin and it is necessary to moisturise it in depth. For proper hydration we must use creams with ingredients such as niacinamide, which will help us to improve the skin barrier or hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that we have naturally in our body and is one of the main responsible for keeping the skin hydrated and juicy and is also a precursor of collagen, which gives firmness to the skin.
We must not forget that the tan we have in summer is due to the pigmentation of our cells thanks to a substance called melanin. While we keep our tan, these cells are still present in our skin, but as the weeks go by, we lose them and this can lead to the appearance of sun spots. To avoid this as much as possible, we should use a depigmenting product. My advice is to use it in serum format, as it will penetrate into the deepest layers and, in this case, it should contain between 10 and 20% vitamin C to obtain an optimal result (we must be careful if we use a serum with vitamin C and a cream with niacinamide at the same time because it can cause irritation).
You’ll see how by following these simple steps you’ll welcome autumn with skin that’s ready for the cold and beyond!
