We finish another week, today with skin care in your 40s and 50s years old. If you are between 20 and 30 years old or between 30 and 40 and you want to know how to take care of your skin, go to the previous weeks’ posts you have all the information there and if you have any questions you can contact me on Instagram @madridlondonbeauty or @maripazvaldes.
At this age, wrinkles are much more pronounced, and we have lost much of the radiance we had in our 20s and 30s. If you have been concerned about how to care for your skin in the previous decades, you are a long way along the road – congratulations!
If in our 20s we focused on hydration and in our 30s on radiance, from the age of 40 onwards we are going to focus on firmness. Surely, we have already noticed the first signs of sagging and that is what we are going to treat.
FIRMNESS: THE GOAL FOR SKIN CARE IN YOUR 40S
When we reach 40, we cannot pretend to have skin like when we were 20, that is not a realistic goal. Crow’s feet and expression lines will inevitably appear, but we can achieve firm and beautiful skin.
- CLEANSING: At this point, cleansing is no longer a mystery, as we have said in previous deliveries of age ranges, cleansing is a basic step and the ideal is to do a double cleansing, first with an oil-based cleanser such as Caudalie, this oil removes all traces of makeup including waterproof, then remove with water or cotton or muslin and then clean with a water-based cleanser such as a gel and we have the skin cleansed and cleansed.
- TREATMENT: For treatment products we should focus on using ingredients that stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin which are the building blocks of the skin. If we have strong foundations, it will be much more difficult for sagging to occur. Exfoliation is especially important for this type of skin, as it will provide much of the radiance lost over the years.
Between cleansing and exfoliation we will achieve a visibly smaller pore size.
If we use a serum (not essential but highly recommended) it should contain both antioxidant active ingredients, to protect our skin from free radicals and premature ageing, and moisturising active ingredients, as skin tends to become drier with age.
This is the moment to use anti-spot active ingredients if you have hyperpigmentation. We have already said that serums have a higher concentration of active ingredients than creams and that, in addition, their formulation allows them to penetrate more, so they will be more effective.
With regard to creams, as in the previous decade, we must adapt the textures to the needs of the skin. The richer they are, the more nourishing they will be and the heavier they may feel on the skin if it is not excessively dry.
Like a gel texture, it will most likely fall short on these skins. If we use a cream with collagen and elastin precursors, such as, for example, Lierac’s Lift integral cream, it will have a lifting effect and will work on the sagging of the facial contours.
- SUNSCREEN: I know I keep repeating it, but this step, along with cleansing, are the most important in any routine. There is no point in using a firming cream if you are not going to protect your face from the sun. There are many sunscreens available on the market and as I have already said and I will never tire of repeating, it is the most basic step if we want to take care of our facial skin.
- NIGHT CARE: If last week we told you that it was time to start with acids and retinol, at this age, these active ingredients become even more important. At night, the skin regenerates and that is why we should choose this type of renewing ingredient. Of course, they can sensitise the area, which is why they are applied at night and it is especially important to use sun protection the following day, without discussion.
