Coconut oil became fashionable some years ago and at first it seemed that it would be good for everything, it improves the hydration of our skin and our hair, you can cook with it to get healthier recipes and many more uses that we will see later.
But is it really as useful as we think? The reality is that coconut oil is useful for many things, but if it is not used properly it can not only not make the desired effect but can even be harmful. We will see in which cases coconut oil is good and in which cases it is better not to use it.
???? Why YES it is advisable to use the coconut oil:
- Night mask: Dry skin will appreciate its application once or twice a week. The best time for the skin to repair itself is at night and coconut oil is a great option. The way to use it is with freshly cleaned skin, put the coconut oil directly on the face. The next morning remove the excess with your usual soap and do the morning routine.
In this case, the coconut oil will help to moisturize the skin, promoting hydration.
- Make-up remover: Coconut oil is a gentle make-up remover that removes even waterproof make-up. It is ideal as a first step of double Korean cleaning, you can apply it with a cotton but I recommend applying it with your hands because we will give a massage that will help the makeup dissolve much better. Then simply remove it by rinsing it off in the usual way. The best thing about this make-up remover is that it is also moisturizing and will help us prevent wrinkles and crow’s feet!
- Hair conditioner: Our hair will also have a number of benefits with coconut oil as it will moisturize, protect and prevent frizz. It can be used as a mask by applying it from medium to ends and leaving it on all night (do not forget to put something on the pillow to avoid it getting dirty) and the next morning wash it as usual, you will see the shine and softness it brings. You can also use it by applying a few drops also on mediums and tips to avoid frizz and then comb it as usual. You will notice healthier and shinier hair.
- Cuticle oil: When we get a manicure, our cuticle often suffers, either because it has to be pushed or cut. Coconut oil will keep the area totally hydrated and strengthened.
- Lip balm: This can also be used to protect the skin of the lips from cold and wind. In this case, we recommend pouring a small amount into a small bottle so that we can take it with us and apply it when we need it.
???? Why it is NOT recommended to use it:
- As a regular facial treatment: Coconut oil is our great ally in moisturising the skin but it has a problem: it is comedogenic. That is to say, in oily and mixed skins it will not go well because it will tend to bring out pimples and acne and even in dry skins if it is used in a very habitual way it can also cause it. Therefore, it is much better to leave it for times when we have drier skin and need an extra dose of hydration.
- As a tooth whitener: It is very common that coconut oil mixed with bicarbonate whitens teeth. It is not advisable to use it for this purpose as bicarbonate erodes the enamel and will lead to much greater problems such as tooth sensitivity.
- As a fat burner: Although it is true that coconut oil taken occasionally can be good for our body because it has antibacterial and antiviral properties, it can also irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa. Furthermore, an oil will always have a caloric contribution and although it is more recommendable than other types of oils, it is not the most suitable if we want to lose weight.
Do you know of any other use for coconut oil or any situation in which it is not recommended? Leave it in the comments. I am willing to read you.
