A new step in the facial routine: essence

I do not know about you, but when I think about cosmetics in these temperatures, I just want to use light, easily absorbed textures. If you are like me, read on because we are going to delve into the world of essence as a step in your skincare routine.

Until a while ago, I did not even know what an essence was and today it is a basic step that I follow both in the morning and at night.

It is an exceptionally light cosmetic that should be applied after the toner and before the serum. It is a must in the Korean routine. It has a very high concentration of ingredients, and they are very useful to multiply the effect of our treatment.

For some time now, we have been adding steps and imitating the Korean routine more and more, but it seems that the essence is one of the steps that we resist the most, perhaps because we do not know its function well or because we do not give it importance.

Essence? Serum? Or… both?

The essence can be confused with the serum, although they are not the same and both are important steps for the treatment to work.

It has a much lighter texture, and its main function is to make the active ingredients penetrate the skin much better. Imagine that your skin is like a sponge when it is dry and you pour gel on it, it will not be distributed evenly, and it will not penetrate well through the sponge. Now pour water on it.

The gel will distribute itself much better and will reach all parts of the sponge. Roughly speaking, the essence acts like water and the sponge would be our skin. Its main function is to multiply the effectiveness of the treatment we are going to use.

The serum is the step that comes after the essence and this one will have a high concentration of active ingredients. It has a slightly less liquid texture than the essence and a small amount is necessary for the whole face.

Favourite essences

The first essence I tried was Filorga NCTF and… oh my god!!!! You can really feel the change from using it to not using it. There are many days that my routine is based on cleansing, essence, serum, and sunscreen. I would never have imagined leaving the house without cream, but with the essence, I find that the serum is more than enough to keep my skin looking good throughout the day.

The next, I have my eye on is Caudalie’s Glycolic Brightening Essence. I think I have liked everything I have tried from this brand (their facial cleansing routine, first the oil and then the foam is out of this world). Although in my case I do not have blemishes, but it will help me to prevent them and as it contains glycolic acid it will give me luminosity and improve the texture of my skin. And do not forget that it contains moisturising active ingredients, so I cannot wait to try it out, do you want me to tell you how it goes?

All in all, I love the scent’s step into my routine. Since I have incorporated it into my routine, I have not stopped using it every single day, morning and night. Did you know about the essence step?, do you use it?, and I will see you next week!
